Traumatic Brain Injuries
People who have suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to the trauma of a car wreck, a car vs. pedestrian wreck, or some other kind of traumatic accident oftentimes suffer injury to their sense of vision and hearing.
In children, a TBI can result in auditory processing problems, conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss. Children may also suffer balance problems associated with damage to the vestibular system.
Vision issues that may be caused by TBI may include infections caused by the nebulizer mists, which may result in corneal ulcers and other unfortunate side effects, problems with visual processing such as double vision, vision field loss, nystagmus and nearsightedness.
Children are vulnerable to a multitude of side effects of traumatic brain injury. Children may have difficulties in communication following a TBI, as well as difficulties in acquiring new information, difficulties in spatial orientation, attention and concentration, task completion, impulse control, dealing with anger, social integration, and social conversation.
Unfortunately, sensory problems are common following traumatic brain injury. The vision problems are categorized as Post Trauma Vision Syndrone, or PTVS. Alarmingly, over 50% of children who have suffered TBI have vision problems, including double vision, and visual field defects. Blurred or double vision may improve during the first 6 months following a TBI but field abnormalities are more likely to remain.

Some alarming statistics from the Brain Injury Association website (2002) include the following:
- An estimated 5.3 million Americans - a little more than 2% of the U.S. population - currently live with disabilities resulting from brain injury.
- It is estimated that one million people are treated for TBI and released from hospital emergency rooms every year.
- Each year, 80,000 Americans experience the onset of long-term disability following TBI.
- More than 50,000 people die every year as a result of TBI.
- Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of brain injury. They account for 50% of all TBIs.
- Falls are the second leading cause, and the leading cause of brain injury in the elderly.
- The risk of TBI is highest among adolescents, young adults and those older than 75.
- After one brain injury, the risk for a second injury is three times greater; after the second injury, the risk for a third injury is eight times greater.
