Driver Who Ran Over Two Teenage Girls and Fled the Scene Is Arrested

December 08, 2009
Topic: Auto/Pedestrian & Auto Bicycle Accidents

Briana Ramos and Gelika Gonzalez, eighth-graders at J.L. Long Middle School were struck on the Santa Fe Trail near the intersection of Santa Fe Avenue and Glasgow Drive in Dallas, Texas while they were walking home from school November 4, 2009

Briana Ramos was released from the hospital Friday and now uses a wheelchair. Briana suffered major injuries as a result of this auto-pedestrian accident. Briana's right lung collapsed. She fractured her left femur and doctors are estimating it may be a year before she can walk again. In addition, Briana also broke her left wrist, and sustained lacerations to her kidney and liver.

Gelika Gonzalez also suffered very significant and life changing injuries. She suffers from memory loss and brain damage from her closed head injuries. Gelika spent five days in the hospital and suffered burns all along the left side of her body. She is scarred for the rest of her life.

Police have arrested the 16-year-old boy accused of hitting him. Witnesses said he lost control of his car in the rain and sped away instead of stopping to help.

The mothers of two 14-year-old-girls who were critically injured when they were hit by a car are working to make an east Dallas walking path safer. The mothers of both girls are working to add new safety posts added to the walking path. A Dallas transportation committee recently approved funding for the posts at crosswalks on the trail.

Obviously this case is a tragedy for the two young girls involved as well as for their families. Hopefully, these girls will recover and the driver of the vehicle that hit them and fled the scene will be held accountable. If you or a loved one is involved in a serious car wreck such as a hit and run accident or an auto-pedestrian accident, an 18 wheeler accident or if you are hit by a drunk driver, you should consider contacting an attorney to know your rights. In cases such as these, medical bills will quickly soar beyond the ability of most families to pay those bills. Often, you will need the assistance of an attorney to not only help you sort out the options of what can be done to get the necessary medical care that your family member needs when money is tight and health insurance companies refuse to provide coverage because the driver of the vehicle that caused the wreck has insurance, even though that insurance is refusing to pay medical bills or to settle your case. This type of incident can be so devastating that it can quickly drive a family into bankruptcy.
