Deadly Plane Crash Near Lake Tawakoni
June 17, 2009
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash of Cessna 150-L airplane that and had one person on board. The pilot apparently took off from Phillips Flying Ranch in Greenville Tuesday night, but the craft wasn't discovered until Wednesday morning. According to statistics from the National Transportation Safety Bureau, there have been 383 aviation accidents with 78 fatalities in the United States as of the end of April, 2009.
In June of 2009, FAA officials said they will beef up inspection of pilot training programs at regional airlines in response to safety concerns raised by the crash of a regional airliner in New York in February. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Federal Aviation Administrator Randy Babbitt said in a statement they will also hold a meeting with the airline industry - both regional and major carriers - next week to seek better pilot training, cockpit discipline and other safety improvements.
In its investigation of a February 2009 crash, the NTSB has noted issues regarding sleep deprivation due to the long hours some pilots are working and the low pay of pilots. Part of the problem is that because of the low pay, many pilots live hundreds of miles from the airports where they work. As a result, many of these pilots take long flights to work before piloting aircraft for airlines which may lead to pilot fatigue and unsafe flying. As a result, the NTSB is considering imposing new rules regarding this practice.
At Montes Herald Law Group, LLP, we understand that it is critical that the public be able to trust that our aviation system be supported by properly maintained aircraft, and that flight crews are not only properly trained, but that they are not suffering from sleep deprivation because the risk of serious injury or death to airplane passengers in the event of an airplane crash is so great.
